Immigration Minister Marc Miller says in the next few months he’ll be looking at the possibility of putting a cap on the number of international students living in Canada, but he wouldn’t say how great a reduction the government is planning on making. In an interview airing Sunday, the minister told CTV’s Question Period host Vassy Kapelos this is a conversation the federal government will need to have with provincial governments “to make sure that the provinces that have not been doing their jobs actually rein in those numbers on a pure volume basis.
That volume is disconcerting,” Miller said, in reference to the number of international students in Canada. “It’s really a system that has gotten out of control.”

Ontario has made a change to its Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP)
Employer Job Offer: International Student stream by expanding the eligibility requirement for students who have completed a one-year college graduate certificate effective from 1st January 2024.
Previously, the OINP’s Employer Job Offer: International Student stream allowed candidates to apply with a one-year credential from an eligible institution only if the program required the completion of a degree as an admission requirement.
With this change, the OINP allows applicants of any one-year college program that grants an Ontario College Graduate Certificate to qualify for the program, which increases the number of certificate programs eligible for the OINP.
British Columbia on regular basis has selected high-scoring candidates by issuing invitations to them through BC PNP draw who have applied under each category in the PNP that allows them to live and work on a permanent basis.
